A recent study into solar farms across the UK, found that these energy facilities don’t just have to be about low carbon electricity they can also help reverse biodiversity decline. A combination of adequate design and management and appropriate public policies could help ensure that solar farms can be managed to enhance biodiversity.

The study found that solar farms can boost local pollinator populations end enhance pollination to adjacent crops. They found that if solar farms were managed as wildflower meadows it would benefit bumblebee foraging and nesting. They have also been found to boost the diversity and abundance of certain plants and deliver multiple ecosystem services in addition to biodiversity conservation.

Increasing support for net-zero targets

A recent poll found that nearly three-quarters of people are backing the Government target of cutting the country’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. A poll by YouGov for Climate Barometer, which works hard to track public opinion on climate change, concluded that support for net zero had risen form 69% in April to 74% in July. Climate Barometer stated that it was the biggest uptick in support for net zero.

Dr Susie Wang, co-director at climate Barometer, said ‘Our polling shows a clear uptick in support for net zero after 2 years where previously it had remined roughly the same level’. The polling was also part of a climate survey of more than 2,300 people, which concluded that renewable energy and clean technology were seen as the biggest growth opportunities in the next 5 years.
